El público de televisión lo recuerda por el personaje de Francis Urquhart en tres miniseries de política-ficción: House of Cards (1990), To Play the King (1993) y The Final Cut (1995). Richardson interpretó a Sherlock Holmes en The Sign of Four (1983) y The Hound of the Baskervilles (1983), fue Jean-Paul Marat en Marat/Sade, y recibió un Tony por My Fair Lady (1976). También participó en Brazil (1985) y The Fourth Protocol (1987).
